Rise Up Leadership Academy

A Place to Belong

Rise Up Leadership Academy (RULA) is a dynamic, year-round program that provides a fun and safe place for youth to belong. RULA launched in August 2024, in partnership with Rosa Parks Elementary and the City Heights Recreation Center. RULA began with an initial cohort of twenty-four 5th graders and plans to walk alongside these students through high school graduation, adding a new 5th grade cohort each year.

In San Diego, most youth who join a gang do so by age 12.[1] RULA works with students early—before they reach this age—to prevent them from getting involved in gangs.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

We believe these youth have the potential to become leaders and sources of strength in their communities, even from a young age!

RULA empowers students to excel academically and personally, paving the way for high school graduation and success in college or vocational training.

SERVICES & PROGRAMMING

RULA students receive over 1,300 hours of support annually. RULA activities include the following:

  1. Sports & Recreation: Dedicated time for active play with peers, staff, and volunteers. This time is given to students to unwind and express creativity.
  2. Tutoring & Academic Support: Dedicated time for the students to do their assigned homework and receive assistance as needed from volunteers and staff.
  3. Guest Speakers: Community members provide workshops for students covering various topics such as career exploration, healthy relationships, and mental health.
  4. Skill Building Workshops: RULA staff facilitate activities that teach skills like decision-making, empathy, and empowerment. Activities are culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate for participants.
