Rise Up Industries was founded in 2013 by several people who volunteered with Kairos Prison Ministry at RJ Donovan Correctional Facility. Inspired by the work of Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest, most successful gang intervention and reentry program in the world. Joe, our Executive Director, asked Father Greg if any programs like Homeboy existed in San Diego. Father Greg looked at Joe and said, “No. Why don’t you start one?” And Rise Up Industries was born. Rise Up Industries’ Reentry Program opened in Santee in March 2016. We assist previously incarcerated and former gang involved individuals successfully reenter society helping reduce the gang population and the recidivism rate.
At Rise Up Industries, our mission is to minimize gang involvement by providing integrated gang intervention, gang prevention, and post detention reentry. With our program we hope to break the cycle of gang involvement. Gang involvement is a systemic issue that is continued with the youth in the community. Unfortunately, previously incarcerated, formerly gang involved individuals face numerous barriers to successful reentry, especially employment. This pushes many back into criminality and perpetuates the cycle of recidivism. The Reentry Program offers more than income—it offers a sustainable career. We prepare our members for careers in CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machining, which is a well-paying trade that is in high demand.
